A well presented and thoughtful collection from a much respected poet, Matters Arising is an intelligent and accessible contribution to a poet’s bookshelf. It is by means of the author’s deft observational skills, combined with succinct exposition, that it successfully engages the reader without undue fuss. Indeed, there is brevity language used in many of the poems and a word is seldom wasted. One recurring theme considered is the advancement of age, one well-handled by the author as it can often be a rather subjectively personal gambit for a poet to embark upon, and there is a pleasant balance of humour to be found throughout. As they say in the art world: that’s what makes it interesting - light against the dark. And vice versa.
