four poems for charles simic
iii. to you darling
tomorrow morning i'm going to the dentist
in the red gown and cap you laundered
tomorrow i'm having my mouth autographed
with my teeth in its faded gums
it will seem like a bicycle hob in tension
on a dusty day / one hand into the morning
the plant is ill-branched and aloft in a farm
it must have been a date / a drab date
hard and sweet to make each bud soar
so that one goes on celebrating / for now
the path's lit and there are old merits
slow reversing camels with deserteyes on
uncertain riders awake at the saddle
because it's such a nice lips-chapping night
lousy men are infusing plain tea
or they go on to the path to stay
shadow-lengthened and expensively silhouetted
in the backdrop of these beasts that are stopping
so high or so low / one merely perceives them
they're like stars / if you see them / the glowed stars
