four poems for charles simic
iv. court judges shadowed against the sky
i never spared them a wink. months had passed by,
many months. i had lots of other things
to muse over. this evening i was in the psychologist's cell
when his old guard trudged in
feigning not to know me in earnest
as i opened my mind accordingly.
we were romancing in the garden by the road side,
and i wanted her to slough off her undies
the horizon was dimming, there was even darkness
when she finally did, so that the last thin
sun ray fell and lit one of her thighs.
that was milder than what she did to my valley now,
while i moaned, while i waited for a miracle
probably a swift sexy smile coming over her
at the remembrance of us alone rolling fired hot
past the court with its columns and wigged judges
shadowed against the starry sky
Author’s Note: As for Charles Simic he is an American poet who has published numerous collections of poetry. In 1990 he won the prestigious Pulitzer prize with his collection of prose poems. I wrote this sequence of poems and dedicated them to him because I admire his unique style of writing which, although it is sometimes 'erotic', does not all the time appear as so.
Ismail B. Garba is a lecturer in English at Bayero University, in Kano, Nigeria. His poems are widely published in many anthologies and journals.
