A Last Sight
Wilson parked and got out of her car,
and then she stood still in the street
between the car and the passing traffic.
From our vantage we couldn’t determine
what precisely she was doing.
Her shoulders were slightly hunched,
and her head tilted forward.
Perhaps she was looking in her bag,
but not being certain,
I did not record it.
After a moment she straightened and stepped toward the curb,
pushing as she did so what looked like a piece of green paper
into the pocket of her suit.
They would later confirm it.
She had not, it appeared, locked the door of her car,
and although we could not be certain of this,
I thought it worth noting.
They would later confirm it.
Her navy blue suit was expensive and reasonably new,
some blend of synthetic and wool,
and it made a clear contrast to her beaten-up
and almost colourless Buick.
On the sidewalk she looked straight ahead,
then moved north with a measured gait
toward the intersection of Eighth and Pine.
As she neared the corner, I signalled to Flint,
who in turn signalled Walker.
Then I nodded to Haynes, and she at once
packed up our equipment.
I caught a last sight of Wilson
as she turned the corner.
She passed through the lunch-hour crowd
as if her body had been blessed
with built-in radar.
Her feet, in very high heels,
never altered their rhythm,
and throughout her circulatory system,
her blood, eager and red, kept its course
with only a moderate acceleration of tempo.
