Evening Dress
Death, when I see her,
will be wearing green,
a low-slung delicate number,
a shadow of cleavage
teasing my eyes.
Her eyes dark
as the still waters of a loch
with a flicker of brightness,
the way sun might skim
along the surface water.
Her hands will be warm.
I will see that I’ve known her
all along: old lovers,
easy in each other’s ways.
I will slip the narrow straps
from her shoulders,
watch the green dress
glimmer to the floor.
We will stand naked together,
hands lightly resting
on each other’s body,
foreheads touching,
eyes half-closed.
The living world will be frantic -
rushing and jerking around us
trying to re-gain my attention.
But I will only have time
for the dip and curve of her hip
under my palm,
the feel of her breast
against my skin.
We will lie down together
and I will sink into her,
be released.
