Absence
I have plumped two pillows
smoothed the sheets
put out your glass of milk and water
fixed the light so it will not shine in my eyes
if you read yourself to sleep.
and if I keep to my side of the bed
and do not reach tentatively for you
from an unquiet dream
or wake too slowly at first light
and turn to you as I do
on more fortunate mornings
I will keep you all night a breathing space away
and with no sense of absurdity
will make two cups of coffee
heat two croissants in the temperamental gas oven
lay two places at the breakfast table.
