Keene, New Hampshire
Fuck me, they really do
have mailboxes like on the telly.
The front doors here
don’t suffer the indignity of
letterboxes.
There’s a lot of wealth
in this town.
You can tell a prosperous town
because the gutters are spotless.
The gutters in Keene are spotless.
Brilliant white concrete
you could eat your tea off.
The public spaces are immaculately kept,
grass verges are trimmed
and law and order is maintained.
They say “Have a nice day”.
When I bought cigarettes
they asked for identification.
Cigarettes.
Many houses fly
The Star Spangled Banner.
But behind the white picket fences
there is a creeping malaise.
Something is going to happen,
you can just tell that something bad
is going to happen.
