Shadows of a family
The house casts a shadow all the way down the street.
A cloud of darkness hiding the shame.
The air inside is thick; it has to be to deaden malice.
Pain is no longer sharp and fleeting,
but a lingering, unbearable ache.
I awake to mourning, the loss of
a family I didn’t know I had
until they were gone.
The memories fade into the woodwork
but still cling to my soul.
The love lines the bins, gathering dust;
it’s stained for all time.
Running to be saved, screaming,
trying to survive -
until the words choke and
the breath can’t escape.
