Reflection
What am I looking at out of the window?
My eyes are tired. I can make out
a man in a car, waiting at the lights,
and a small dog chasing something, terrier-like.
Wind-swept, people hurry through the park,
their scarves flapping or bags growing unruly.
I squint to see if I recognise anyone.
Rows of terrace houses rise up opposite,
the unpainted ones like gaps between teeth.
On the top tier, the hospital, the old asylum,
its grim past making it prominent, like a presage.
In the cloud-filled double windows
patients or visitors sit, losing sight of the town
below – traffic weaving, lights coming on –
with the clear impression that they’re ghosts
of someone looking out of a window.
