AA Man
Carefully past the welcome lights,
the warming smell of smoke and hops,
and cheerful laughter, he counts his steps.
Another fifteen, twenty, take him past
to safety in the darkness, to the road
that leads into his unsure future.
At home, he sips his tea, watches TV,
remembers the forgotten nights and weeks;
goes soberly and carefully to bed.
Awakes
without the shakes
without the aches, into
a brand new life he starts on every day.
