Anna Wigley
Blackbird
Sleek priest-suited rustler
of bushes and back lawns,
always holding some information, urgent,
in his listening circles of eyes
and carrying it, quick,
to some place where he can bury it.
Sharp detective of the herb-gutters
and cat-concealing shrubs,
scuttering from muggings,
sounding the all-red siren of his
stone-chipping flint from a wall-top.
Then in the porcelain hour
before dusk. pulling posy after posy
of trefoil and scarlet pimpernel
from the field in his breast.
