Mr Snow
All summer long we heard his jingling call:
Greensleeves drifted up from the estate.
Snatches of that irritating tune
Drowned birdsong as he moved from street to street.
Young children would go running in from play
Demanding ice cream. Snowman’s here!! they’d shout.
Each summer day he turned up without fail
And, as days shortened, still his chimes rang out.
Autumn came, the weather broke. Out in the rain,
Each night at dusk, Greensleeves played on.
Who needs a Magnum, Ninety-nine or Split
When warm indoors with sticky buns or scones?
From the darkness small groups now flag him down
Asking for supplies not in his fridge;
Adults park up close to clinch a deal -
Soft ice cream sales go down but he grows rich.
