A diplomatic Protestant exiled
to a top floor flat
in well-worn London. Beam of child
with glowing adult wit
was how you first seemed then.
Wine-fired face like a pink clock,
most genial of men,
of solid yet sensitive Ulster stock
a poet. Like a company clerk
holding a post of integrity,
you gave guests biscuits and wine,
gossip of poetry
and that ‘something more of it’
the je ne sais quoi with which
to fuel a younger spirit
and make it rich.
Recalling that high stucco’d house
and you, memory will always grant
the human touch and nous
stamping the muse’s true servant.
