The lining was black satin
dotted with needlepoint daisies, her initials.
Wide collar, flared waist,
all the rage, like Jackie or Audrey post-Tiffany's,
long white gloves, little calf bag.
Her bags were wrapped in plastic,
stacked neatly on the shelf,
matching shoes for each in rows beneath.
My foot slid right down to the toe,
my toes crowding into the sharp point until it hurt.
There was a flurry of soft pink feathers,
a swirl of Pucci paisley in dayglo
blue and green, a long cream gown studded
with gold. Folded neatly, returned to their boxes:
Lord and Taylor, Saks Fifth Avenue, Marshall Field.
To be unpacked by the staff at St. Peter's Thrift,
to be twirled around the floor once more
by a volunteer on her coffee break,
or a lady of indeterminate age
who once wanted this dress so much she ached.
The only thing my mother did not give away
was that coat: custom-made,
lining still good, fur still tight,
as it can only be
on lambs not yet born.
