Mother and Daughter
I suggested the sprinkler on the bath
but you chose to stand at the handbasin
head lowered into the hot water.
We giggled as I frothed
your white head into clouds
and you squeezed your eyes
beneath the cloth. Here you said,
and here getting me to knead
your temples and the soft nape
of your neck. We rinsed your still-
thick crop and fluffed
it downy as a thistlehead,
and we fooled and joked
till your face glowed out from the towel
like a sunflower after a shower.
