Brought Down and Taken Up
The six p.m. train March
has just missed the sunset,
rides into the west towards
an orange slash on a black
horizon under the tenderest blue.
The train heads on between
walls of stood-up silhouette
cut from black paper...
Except when these flats crash
shockingly into horizontal
under the blows of brought-down
sky lying in mirror fragments
as ponds and long rhynes
and the waterlogged fields
that sweat pale shining.
We start to pass houses.
Downstairs some windows
glow gold suppertime.
Where light comes on upstairs
a woman takes a child to bed.
He is sprawled on her chest,
the weight of his rump on
my arm. His round brow fits
into the hollow of my throat
till the dark closes on it.
