When I'd built the Wendy House:
hung the ship-lapped half-doors;
inserted the tiny perspex windows,
then got dad round, my brother-in-law
and Mick from next door
to help carry it like a sedan-chair
across the lawn, using two lengths
of four by two, and parked it on corner slabs,
they used it as a witch's house;
a last resort in hide and seek.
Now, it's a squat for spiders and mice.
Next, I'm going to make them
an oak cabinet each.
I'm going to finger-joint
the secret drawers; inlay the doors
with strips of Lebanese cedar
and polish the tops, till
I can see my face in them.
