Clive Kilgour
On a Cloudy Day
She puts loads of clothes on the line.
She walks back in with an empty basket.
She sits down and waits.
She watches them blow from the window -
Boys’ clothes, girls’ clothes,
Men’s clothes, women’s clothes,
Whites and colours
And different materials
Smelling fresh.
She imagines her family inside them.
She wonders how they are.
She knows there’s something bizarre
In keeping old clothes
Washed and dried
Time after time.
It looks as if it will rain.
She is ready to dash back out
And bring everything back in again.
