The Patron Saint of Vacuum Cleaners
Old Joan, an entire top field on her small
holding, fifty or more, donations warmly welcome,
out to grass and no more carpet.
Tethered by fraying flexes some lie down
with hoses curled around battered bodies,
a few have nozzles arched high
sucking up clear open sky
their muzzling attachments thrown away.
Groups stand, upright, with caved-in flanks
by the trough and fence, their old
neck curves asking to be stroked.
Twice daily Joan trots round the field,
inspects and pats each one, coaxing some
for a gentle walk that is not and never will be
back and forth, back and forth, back and forth.
