Miles to go before home, but we’ve seen
no other cars since the A1.
Early dusk sweeps colours into grey and white
where peaks and valleys are spattered
with snow. Cottages stipple the view,
imagination teased by lights in windows
and behind our gentle silence, the engine’s hum
massages us after the family schedule:
my mother calling us at seven,
guided tours through new homes
where you became ‘family’ and I shuffled
my perceptions of brothers now grown
until a hasty party hustled in
New Year promises.
My fingers still hold a silver-papered sweet,
a goodbye gift from the sunny-haired girl
who tested ‘Uncle’ and ‘Aunt’ against us.
