Days Of The Curriculum
Today is the day of the hyphen
and the history of its importance.
When primitive man discovered
that red hot poker was not the same
as red-hot poker, he had to look up
the double-barrels to find the truth
dislocated at the elbow
and crossed the great divide into civilisation.
Insoluble problems are left at the leisure
of great men who ruminate on their moorland tracts.
Winston Churchill lit the beacon that could be seen
almost as far away as Dresden. Only Cromwell hung
by a thread for a few years before our heritage
was rejoined. We are reconciled to Europe
through the translations of Forster’s ‘only connect’
and we learn just one foreign language - French -
reviving the spirit of Richard Coeur-de-Lion.
