Gordon Day
I Came To In A Restaurant
at the head of the table.
Someone close tucked the tablecloth
under my chin, then I dozed off
like you do after a heavy meal.
But no one eats out in only pyjama
bottoms. The nurse later explained
this illusion and how I’d only just
proved hard work never killed anyone.
The foreman came round
to the family, airing new found
altruism over my head
still buzzing like a dream.
My nightmare is the DHSS
coercing me into a Harry Worth
on the shop window corner
to make my right side work.
I stall by describing half
circles with a dead right leg -
perpetual name, number, name …
