From: Dark Eros (1977)
Who Is That Approaching?
— Or is it Night herself shaking her hair
Before the glittering mirror of her void,
The dusty glass partition of her darkness?
Who is that approaching
An angel wrapped in winter clothes
Incredibly shivering in the plantation of the stars
Who is that approaching
Jesus the innocent who believed in miracles
And became an idol on the heavenly stage
Telephones ring madly from the next life
Hello! Hello! there's no-one at the other end.
Tonight, prey to a devastation
All things lie unconscious in their icy sleep
The indifferent lamps above spray out their light.
And men below the earth:
Suckling on the drug of their own fear
Opening non-existent galleries into the beyond
Watching the imminent with sightless eyes.
And your hair is made of filthy air
And you are a word unborn in the galaxy of time.
All that and all the rest
digested
In the inhuman sensitivity of the poet.
