Apotheosis
Time was when if a man was strong they made
A god of him, gave him the world or playground,
And wise against his atrophy, they bade
Artificers hew stone until they found
A Phidias to save his splendid postures.
When he had ramped his fill about the earth
Poets set their wits to work with fond impostures,
Lest he should pine in hell for lack of mirth:
Persephone for Theseus, and for Hercules
Hebe to fill his cup and keep him strong!
Best thought of all—for that fierce ghost Achilles
Burning Medea to keep his anger young . . .
We have our athlete still. He rows at Putney;
Then goes into a firm for pickling chutney.
