The Renegade
Forget the vows I swore, forgive
My two-days adoration,
Since such my love, it cannot live
Wholly by contemplation.
And since to me alone thou art
Pallas, to others Venus,
No more shalt thou retain my heart,
But all be done between us.
I cannot act the Platonist
Content with love's abstraction,
Nor yet endure uncared, unkissed
A long two-days inaction.
Then say good-bye, nor me upbraid
That I seek other beauty,
For I am made a renegade
By thy neglect of duty.
