A Kitchen Garden
The King of the Enchanted Seas
Is fighting with the cabbages,
Because the stars with silver din
Tell him that beauty sleeps within;
And so he clears himself a way
Swinging a great sword all the day.
The King of the Enchanted Seas
Has passed the hedge of cabbages.
He turns terrific eyes around
And sees the beetroots on the ground.
Instead of rue the rhubarb grows,
The parsnip supplements the rose.
He sees no beauty and no grace
But vegetable commonplace.
The King of the Enchanted Seas
Has smashed his sword across his knees,
And with an ordinary face
He puts the kidney beans in place;
Into a geometric plot
He packs the season's haricot,
And spends his intellect upon
The unresponsive onion.
The King of the Enchanted Seas
Is Emperor of cabbages.
