Ian Seed
The City and the River
For Cory Harding
We searched all our lives:
the branches grew through the years
and the roads we walked
became shrouded in shadow.
In the end
there was a shining river
and on the other side we could see
the city we had once dreamt of.
Yet we were afraid to cross,
and instead lay down and closed our eyes
as if the city and the river
might no longer be there when we awoke.
