Urbs and Suburbs
Back from the town,
where half the shops, it seems, are boarded up,
and where crisp-packets, empty cartons, plastic cups
stir in the wind along the pavement edge,
I’m glad to notice in suburban streets
a green fuzz in the trees, and creamy blossom,
while in our garden tulips and narcissi
wave flags for Easter. Bright forsythia flares,
the flowering currant is a splash of crimson
between the showers. I smell its tom-cat scent,
pleasant outdoors, too pungent for the house.
The grass has greened up well but is too wet
to cut today.
