Stalks of men
You spoke of diamonds and of a sky
that rose invincibly above the shining
city and if this was not always true, does it
matter that we did not keep our promises?
Naturally, it goes on and seeks somewhere
along the maze of lines an end in itself
though we kid ourselves it’s simple
like a stone cast into a pond.
The baby is crying and you would like
the baby to be less afraid than you,
but this cannot be arranged and
you stand like an idiot alone, your
profile tiny yet mighty against the
curve of the universe. You no longer
hope for anything, but it’s time
to start walking to the end of the world.
