Photography
My photographs are centred around objects and glimpses of myself. I work in monochrome and use different types and weights of paper to create a variety of depths and textures. By working on a small scale, I hope to encourage closer scrutiny and promote a more intimate dialogue between viewer and the piece.
I work intuitively and spontaneously, sketching rough compositions, letting the elements of the photograph suggest their own positions rather than following a plan or aiming towards a theme. The variable and unpredictable effects of light and shade make the development process one of discovery and revelation.
After completing a set of prints, I then try to identify a connective thread based on visual or narrative qualities, either expressed or implicit, leaving space for the pieces to speak for themselves rather than attempting to fit them into a preconceived construct.
