The Pool
In summer sometimes you recall
my depth and the intimate conversation
of bulrush and iris. With a chair and a book
and half a smile, we spend an afternoon.
Water lilies open to cool your eyes,
indolent fish are dancing - On the first
morning of the world; (you say)
the stars began to breathe.
Sometimes you neglect me altogether -I
catch ten frogs to pass the time
listen to a heron's silence,
let the dragonflies whirl.
Each evening to show I'm not forgotten
you send your messenger the cat
he stalks down the lawn, stretches his neck
and gives me your delicate kisses.
When the Temple of the Winds was drowned
I caught your tears each night:
looking for broken statues, their faces
glowing like gardenias.
If ever I freeze over will you promise
to walk across me barefoot? I will not break.
Remember my caress at sunset
come to me naked as before.
