Introduction
Welcome to the new issue of Dream Catcher. Enjoy. A recent report said that languages all over the world are dying out at a remarkable rate; some are reduced to only a dozen speakers, some to just one or two. When these languages, from Brazil to China, finally die with their speakers, think of all the stories and poetry and charred legends and experiences that will die with them.
That’s where magazines like this come in: a true magazine helps to keep language alive, keeps it refreshed, keeps it reinventing itself. When people weep about apostrophes in the wrong place they’re weeping for a fossilised language, one that can never develop. Dream Catcher is a language development machine. You might say that English is safe enough, it’s a dominant language, colonising all in its path. Yep, but we want the language to fulfil its potential, to recreate, redefine, and what better way than so-called ‘literary’ writing to do this?
Read and then write. Write and then read.
