From: Upstanding Supper (1978)
The Greece You Have in Mind...
The Greece you have in mind is not just a wound.
Coffee crowned with froth in the lax hour,
radio and television on the balcony,
bronzed earth, bronzed body,
Greece, bronzed cork in my lips.
The fish-glue of the sun on the sheepfolds
catches our eyes like insects.
Behind the sheepfolds and the disembowelled houses,
soccer fields, prisons, hospitals,
men of God and the Devil's door-knockers,
and the riders of trams alone
drinking acrid wine from Arachova.
Here the heroes slept
guns at their sides,
unshod children in their sleep.
Well-travelled merchants have come and gone
with the rugs and blankets of Nerotrouvia.
Now only pebbles and army boots
are left in this ginning-house for rocks,
and the riders of trams alone
drinking acrid wine from Arachova.
