All In nina steane, 31 headlands, kettering continue to publish very attractive poetry wallstickers - the latest being a limited edition two colour silk screened posterpoem by nina herself.

Amalgam wendy rosier, 9 cambridge close, hounslow, middx. a very colourful mag that changes format with each issue. very well produced but somewhat substandard poetic content.
no 4 13p a beautiful folder out of which comes a neat bound magazine and there the joy stops.
no 5 20p bitter & just as colourful. 4 posters printed both sides and well illustrated, folded down with very cunning design to form a magazine. again the artists beat the poets 10 - nil.

Amazing Grace 13p. elaine randell, 71 horn park lane, london se12. another well printed mag with a good set of illustrations, alternating strangely between good poetry & very bad poetry.
no 3 kirkup/ mcsweeney/ connors/ rudolf/ horovitz/ miles gibson/ etc.
no 4 almost the same poets as no 3 with the addition of pete bland and one or two others.

Ambit (47) 20p. martin bax, 17 priory gdns, london n6. one of the few little mags to last & grow into something thats not so little. always good and exciting reading and always very well printed and set out. poetry from: porter/ clare/ hacker/ grubb/ abse/ etc. concrete from alan riddell/ prose from: gunnar harding/ paul eluard & andrew breton/ etc. a good set of reviews & art work from neagu'p (sigi krauss exhibition/ arthur ellis/. altogether a good magazine.

Attila 1p. unicorn bookshop, 50 gloucester rd, brighton. 8 mimeo pages of local news. this must be the best underground paper (of the smaller variety) around. its not just the type of news reported and the extra bits thrown in but the way they are written. many of the bigger papers could learn a lot from attila. and perhaps attila shd grow - it wd be well worth it.

Axis 12 1/2p. a new printed mag still finding its way. barry fitton, 57 bellshill cres, belfield, rochdale. its slim but it could well grow into something really worthwhile.
no 1 barry fitton/ c b bostock/ and a fair bit of anonymous work.
no 2 brian lomax/ gregory/ holt/ michael mcbride/ dsh/ keith armstrong/ much prose work/ etc.

Backwards but effortlessly miss inchcape! by k.j. flint. 15p. smoothie pubns, 84 ferring street, ferring, worthing. one of these books which you have to read like it was a writing pad - hard on the nerves. the poems roll along, neither good nor really bad ... maybe next time?

Broadside - poems by iago hum-wills from the black turd press. no address shown thank god.

Broadsheet 5p. w.j. barnes, 11 broxbourne rd, orpington, kent. a civil service poets get together - perhaps its best they stay that way & dont invade the other mags. boredom right thru.

Bogg (10/11) 15p. george cairncross, 31 belleu vue st, filey, e yorks. bogg could be a good magazine but the printing has gone from bad to worse. its spirit duplicating which is bad enough anyway - but to plough through 70 odd pages that fade, slide sideways, twist, turn and sometimes vanish altogether is an impossible task. a mag shdnt be put down for trying and you expect a certain amount of bad printing and layout with the newer littles but bogg is 11 issues old. it should certainly be better than this. the content (where i could read it) proved worthy of much better presentation - bogg publishes many poems of humour, good reviews & articles. --- now comes word that bogg is launching an appeal to get itself printed. £1 per person is requested to make up the capital needed. contributors will be paid back by way of subscription.

By Nature Diffident by patrick galvin (snr.) tone press, 30 terminus rd, brighton 1. a one poem letterpress booklet. a true love poem where sex is not hidden by flowers and birds.

California Journal by robert kelly. 17 1/2p. big venus, 240 camden high st, london nw1. a series of poem notebooks in the american tradition. a good solid read - the use of language is there
but never dense & tight, the poems flow like rivers and if thats for you - get this.

The Catonsville Roadrunner 8p. 138 mayall road, london se24. free church. the new christianity ready to envelop this electric age.
its worth getting once at least even if only to see just what the new christianity is or can be. well printed & illustrated with readable articles.

Ceolfrith Press 27 frederick st, sunderland (chris carrell's Bookshop) have started a mixed media series of books/ posters/ prints/ records- its difficult to see just where one ends and the next starts (not that it matters) - and very well produced &reasonably priced they are too:
ceolfrith 3 hawks brite eye by julian lunam-cowan @ 50p. 20 large poem cards in a very well designed folder - all visual items, mimetic rather than concrete and although reasonably effective
now and again the whole set falls a little flat for me - perhaps this kind of thing has been done too often? or perhaps its just the poet thats at fault.
ceolfrith 4 draw more ducks by robin crozier. 75p. much more like it, this one. a box of prints - "drawings, games, collages" - pop art in a way and great value for the price.
ceolfrith 5 ian hamilton finlay 50p & great value. primarily a catalogue for finlay's exhibition at the bookshop gallery in 1970 but as with most good catalogues outlives in exhibition by a long chalk. a neat folder covered with photos of finlay sailing boats and flying kites - inside a large set of prints, photos & booklets: cutts on the wild hawthorn press/ biblographies/ stephen bann on finlay/ photos of finlays environmental works/ original finlay prints/ etc. it all goes to show that finlay is one of the fathers of british concrete but becoming more & more academic. Ceolfrith also publish (for free) a series of newsletters & statements on their exhibitions, publications and activities of all sorts. quite an active scene altogether - its all here in suderland.

Compendium Bookshop 240 camden high street, london nw1 have a new supplement to their poetry catalogue out, listing a good many books & mags not readily available. they have also produced a review supplement to their supplement to their catalogue (!). available for sae,

Come Together 10p. "an anthology of poetry for the international year for racial harmony 1971" published by the birmingham poetry centre, margaret st, B'ham 3. for monyhull village festival. peace poems from the centre's members - nothing really exciting but its for a good cause.

Contrasts (6) 15p. russell pemberton, 9 hoghton rd, hale, liverpool, 124 4bw. horrible layout for a letterpress mag and a rather uneven content but some worthy items nonetheless: paul matthews/ simpson/ pudney/ fulton/ macsweeney/ bold/ hollo/ horovitz/ booth & a good set of reviews.
no 7 new print style & glossy cover. gone is the 1930's image but still a bit cramped. incl: nuttall/ fulton/ magee/ cash/ petit/ simpson/ cobbing/ tipton/ pudney/ booth/ bold/ plus reviews.

Corridor 15p. michael butterworth. 61 seymour st, radcliffe, manchester. a really exciting mag this one ... in the tradition of the old new worlds. what can you call it? progresive sf, experimental
prose, new writings? it matters little. the mag is good. illustrated but with layout problems.

C'mon Everybody -poetry of the dance. edited by pete morgan. corgi books 30p. everyone hasn't c'mon it seems - they've all been rather silent about this excellent anthology - by far the best of the many attempts corgi have had to break into the market held by penguin. the theme of the dance runs through the whole set - not always in name - but its always in there somewhere be it a waltz, a twist or just a private dance of joy. as bob cobbing has discovered: poetry is the next step back from movement, read a poem often enough and it dances by itself. pete morgan has caught this, seen the idea lurking in so many poets work and brought it to the fore. a good book including: patchen/ finlay/ patten/ ginsberg/ burns/ cohen/ hollo/ raworth/ levertov/ duncan & more.

The Curiously Strong free for postage. ian patterson, 65 victoria rd, cambridge. 6 page mimeo foolscap poetry sheet - as always publishing good solid work. none of the usual little mag rubbish
here. including: rosenberg/ macsweeney/ hyatt/ buck/ john james/ nick totton/ anthony barnett/ etc. as issue 9 of curiously strong comes nick totton's "mastering the art of english cooking" an interesting set of prose/poems that seem to be found and constructed rather than written.

Datr (1) 5p. john noyce, smoothie pubns. 67 vere rd, brighton. 'sussex's only literary mag' another mimeo job that has to be read like a writing pad. one or two interesting items inside but pretty weak overall. like all first issues it tells you little. datr could become very big or it could fall after issue 2. incl: flint/ campbell/ leonard/ chamberlin/ upton(v good)/ & more.

Descriptions & other poems by paul matthews. dirftwood poets no 1, 48 middlesex rd, bootle. 15p. brian wakes new venture off to a really good start. paul matthews has long deserved a well printed set to himself - and this is it. the main point about paul matthews work is its quiet undemanding voice, like a blue sky. gentle but never sentimental. good solid language control.

Directory of Alternative Media Periodicals edited by john noyce. 40p. smoothie pubns, 84 ferring st, ferring, worthing, sussex. i wish i could recomend this directory, its the sort of thing that much needed in the uk, but i cant, its totally out of date to begin with - certainly with a directory of this type you expect minor inacuracies but many of the mags listed ceased to exist up to a year before the directory came out & others changed their addresses about the
same time. its not comprehensive to any degree. the comments on each magazine are taken from various small press round ups (mainly this one - and not that i'm worried on this score -honoured really - but i think john noyce wd have made a better job if he'd written his own comments) ... and the term 'alternative media' itself has proved a stumbling block - a good many of the publications listed are as far from alternate as you can go. a good try but overall a rather useless book.

Dodo (4) 13p. steve kuttner, 23 lausanne rd, manchester 20. a much better issue than last time ... well intergrated poems and graphics and a much wider horizon of poets. could get to be quite a mag if it keeps on bringing in new poets and leaves the students alone.

Earthship (3) 20p. kris hemensley, 106 bernard st, southampton. one of the few rising lights in the uk right now. basically there are very very few good mags around, exciting mags - iconolatre, imprint, assylum...they are all finished. earthship stands a good chance of filling the gap. it has one problem - production. its a foolscap mimeo that falls apart a bit and suffers a little from bad layout - but the content is something else again. a great blend of experimental
prose, letters, notes, quotes and exciting poetry. incl: ken taylor/ eshleman/ longville/ chaloner/ grossinger/ cunliffe/ connors/ robertson/ riley/ & some pretty strong and detailed reviews.

Eh? (1) 6p. group editorial, 17 melsonby cres, darlington. a new paper to replace the old alternative press. litho printed radical news sheet hitting where it hurts. we need more papers like this one: drugs, darlington council, free milk, sex, schools, news & notes.

Experimental theatre free poem sheet from axis, 57 bellshill cres, benfield, rochdale. hand set in lettraset & looks it. dsh/ armstrong/ fitton/ bostock/ & others.

Free form poetry two writers forum pamphlet 8 published for a sound poetry event by the new college of speech & drama (london) group. included are texts by dsh & bob cobbing as well as a large set by george macbeth which are interesting to hear but rather dull on the page. copies available from 262 randolf avenue, london w9.

Freepoets (5) david cathcart, 51 seymour rd, st albans. a foolscap mimeo that opens (again) like a writing pad (too many about like this). very local content, & not half as good as poetsdoos.
no 6 better format, opens like a real mag: cathcart/ sivyer/ mackay/ john ward/ boniwell/ etc.

Frendz 15p. 307 portobello rd, w10. a pretty good underground paper in the old tradition but something somewhere has gone wrong! i got this copy from the corner shop. so the underground is now overground. fine. its still the alternative.

Ga by jiri valoch. 12 1/2p. writers forum. 'fives' no 1. 262 randolf ave, london w9. "the first & last sound poems ... in the language of ga" must be a send up. for sonic fanatics & laugh lovers.

Gargantua (1) 10p. robert ensor. 134 hollybank rd, Wham b13 orl. 6o neat mimeo pages of poetry making for good value. incl: bantock/ burns/ spiro/ matthews/ mayer/ steane/ carr/ cash/ etc.
the overall content is uneven but there is enough good stuff to make it a worthwhile venture.

Giants from Lilliput by herbert corby. £1.05. fortune press. 47 rashleigh house, thanet st, wc1. hardback set of poems by a british expatriate in west africa. there are some strong sections here but the whole thing is rather unwieldy. its 100 pages could well be cut by half.

Gong (June 71) 15p. peter cash, wayncroft, croft lane, wainfleet, nr. skegness. fully printed quarto size mag on glossy paper, thiner than last issue. really good use of graphics, prose works and some reasonable poetry but perhaps too quiet for me. gina bruce on joni mitchell/ oxley on rbt graves/ philpott/ jon silkin/ cairncross/ owen davis/ shaw/ lenihan/ hewitt/ etc.

Good Elf (3) 5p. lawrence upton, 18 clairview rd, sw16. a neat slim mimeo. good layout. contents on the up, better than last time but still a while to go yet. martin booth/ peter cash/ jaffin/ henderson-smith/ strachan/ cairncross/ nixon/ steve morris/ elsberg/ cameron/ etc etc.

Goods Train by philip pacey. 20p. 53 fishpool st, st albans. a concrete poem i guess you'd call it from someone who doesnt normally go this far out in experimentation. its a great book
altogether - the complete book-as-movie ie the book works a good deal more for itself than a regular book would. a concrete poem that works on all levels, all counts. a 2nd aeon must.

Greater London Arts 5p. greater london arts assoc. 27 southampton st, wc2. newspaper format run down on all the arts activities in the london area, or almost.

Grosseteste Review (vol 4 no 1) 25p. tim longville, 10 consort cres, commonside, pensnett, staffs. a beautifully printed and designed 70 pages, grosseteste gathers a certain kind of poetry
- what would you call it? i don't know but its neither wild and uncontrolled, academic, or middle of the road. its good solid stuff. well worth a try this one, one of the uk's few really good mags incl: john hall/ chaloner/ torrance/ cisneros/ hemensley/ schjeldahl/ spatola/ freeman & much more.

Haiku Byways (2) 23p. g loose, 14 frognal, london nw3. one of the first haiku only mags to come from the uk. and this one's pretty good - hand set & bound with plenty of illustrations - very much like the canadian mag 'haiku' in format.

Hapt (27) the last and final issue from the hapt tribe. when the idea of diggers and free every thing came to the fore in 1967 hapt started up as a free underground communications and info paper - 27 issues and 4 years later its still free and still providing a very useful channel ofinfo. a great pity to see it go. the people behind hapt carry on as a 'nomadic earth people' and can be contacted via ups europe, box 304, ch 8025, zurich, switzerland.

Hard Waving 10 poems by ulli mccarthy, 10 by bernard kelly. bonefold imprint. 68 parkhill rd, london nw3. a mimeo set with mccarthy coming out top by virtue of his unpredictableness. the most interesting thing about this collection is the post wrapper it came in ... the back of a sheet entitled 'ted heath's trouser endowment' and funny it is too. buy the book & ask for the leaflet.

Headland (7) 25p. gerald england. 34 albany rd, sheffield s7 1dp. a small letterpress mag, a somewhat uneven content with one or two high spots: tipton/ bedford/ hebron/ cairncross/ etc.

Helleborine Pancarte run by lawrence pedersen at stondon cottage, stondon massey, brentwood, kent must be con of the year. they've put out three quarto size sheets, two of them printed on
what looks like bog paper and the other a photocopy. the content is, i guess, a variation on the found poem and should be lost again. prices: 10p for the printed & 20p for the photocopy.

Hummi Grundi by opal l nations. a section of this amazing and very funny work appeared in the last issue of second aeon. the full work is due soon from Edible press, allen fisher, 54 hayes court, london sw2.

Informer (9) 25p. keith armstrong, 16 davenant rd, oxford. 64 litho pages but set on a rather battered typewriter (which somewhat defeats the object of litho)..its rough and ready, has heavy layout problems, its reviews are right out of date but it does contain a fair set of good work: chaloner/ pat hare/ farrell/ dsh/ cobbing/ hoida/ pilcher/ dowden/ sneyd/ lucie smith/ exley/ & more.

Ink 'the other newspaper' 10p. 73 princedele rd, london w11 i'm not too sure of. its not an underground paper, its not a regular paper, its gaudy & it falls between two stools. perhaps its yet to find its feet - and i do hope it gets better than it is now.

Inner garden newsletter (3) free. friends of the garden, central seed-centre, 24 st margaret's close, norwich, nor 66y. the remenants of gandalf's garden ...muz murray setting up seed centres all over the country. this newsletter tells you where.

It 10p. bloom pubns, 11a berwick st, w1 is a lot better now than it used to be. getting back to the good old days when it started almost. It is still the best u/g paper in the uk.

Jako edited and produced as a literary studies project by students at the school of art, 7 hatfiled rd, st albans. copies free for postage. a large mimeo mag which is a bit weak on the production side considering it comes from an art college. much student work that i didnt care much for, a few concrete items that do little and good work from philip pacey & bs johnson.

The Kodak Mantra Diaries a feature on allen ginsberg, a large section of which appears in this issue of second aeon is due out in full from the albion village press, 28 albion drive, london e8. 130 pages. 30 photographs. sounds great. advance orders taken at 85p.

Kontexts (3) 15p. mike gibbs, northcotts farm, whimple, exeter. a great improvement on the last issue. a concrete mag through & through, and there are few enough of these. neat format with a large "notes from the concrete jungle" review section. well worth getting: phillips/ gibbs/ nico mann/ mayor/ d.c.carr/ insingel/ cobbing/ padin/ vigo/ todorovic/ zurbrugg/ mayer/ ulrichs/ de rook.

Kroklok (1) dsh/bob cobbing, 25p. writers forum, 262 randolf avenue, w9. intending to be an evolving encyclopaedia of sound poetry in 21 parts and excellent it is too. well designed and printed. this issue contains some early examples of sonic works plus a few later items plus full notes and introductions. a mag well worth following, no anthology of sound poetry exists and if you collect all 21 issues of kroklok you'll have one. morgenstern/ hausmann/ lewis carroll/ jandl.

Laughing water by keith leonard. 12p. 9 oxford drive, woodbridge, suffolk. a very neat and well set out mimeo collection. it wd be difficult to produce a mimeo set better than this. the poems are on the weak side with the odd flash of insight.

Leaves (10) 5p. 9 oxford drive, woodbridge. mimeo foolscap poetry with little direction or selection, a few good items tho: booth/ connors/ fallon/ flegg/ kuttner/ turner/ & more.no 11/12 final issue: booth/ connors/ kuttner/ steve morris/ sneyd/ vidler/ mark williams/ etc.

Letters to Berlin by matt simpson. 15p. driftwood poets no 2, 48 middlesex rd, bootie 120 9bw. matt simpson is a good poet, he can write a good poem, control his language, use form, make whatever he sees into a poem - there are some bright moments in this book but overall it fails to his that nerve button that some poets do, for me at least.

Lon Chaney (1) 10p. pat galvin jnr, 50 gloucester rd, brighton, one hell of a mag this one. another contender to fill that gap in the uk mag scene, and this one is really good. something like 80 beautiful mimeo pages, A4 size, and no layout problems at all. galvin has taken the theme of the movie, the old silent ones and the early talkies and woven his mag around it ... the poems are all separated by a very well thought out set of quotes from people as far ranging as cobbing
and burroughs. the poetry contained tends towards the experimental but not far enough to put the more traditional reader off: and what a selection: bill butlers home movies part 1 for 11 pages, blazek, wantling, turnbull, jim burns doing reviews, dsh, parfitt, jenkins, zurbrugg, macsweeney, eric mottram, benveniste, edwin morgan, horovitz, hebron & more. the point is that these are not just names - they are excellent poems. second aeon award of the year to lon chaney.

Ludd's Mill (2) 10p. steve sneyd, 4 nowell place, huddersfield HD5 8PB. a pretty slim mag for 10p but then it is litho and has begun to use illustrations in the same manner as crab grass.
better than issue 1 but still a long way to go: henderson smith/ cook/ newman/ scofield/ & more.

mai hart lieb zapfen eibe hold by ernst jandl. 15p. writers forum poets 11, 262 randolf ave, london w9. 3rd edition of a set originally published in 1965, reprinted here for jandl's visit as part of poetry international. sound poems in the main, sometimes using a visual format, some times in english, generally in german - but is a sound poem in any language? try this one.

Mailmag (9) 8p. l.r. lane, severn star, rocklands, longhope. well its supposed to be a mag of adverts & poems but i cdnt read my copy - the duplicating was too bad - really!

Medium 5p. 12 holland st, liverpool 7. a really bad production job ... mimeo using a 1930 machine (if they had them then): poetry, music, protest, prose etc ... expectedly uneven.

20 monogrampoems by alison bielski. 15p. writers forum fives no 2. 262 randolf ave, london w9.a series of monograms of similar construction to pignatari's 'life' and the numerous formings of the
word 'zen' you see around. its an interesting idea but overdone with 20 of them. try it & see.

Muse (1) 18p. bmi poetry centre, margaret st, Wham 3. a well produced first issue, neat paper plate litho, 54 pages and a spine. its all poetry from members of the centre and as with all mags of this type never makes for too exciting reading for those not involved, but it has its moments and is to open its pages to outside contributors soon - and then there could be a good mag.

Necropathia by b.catling. 50p. albion village press, 28 albion village drive, london e8. a well printed set of very strange photos, poems and prose fragments. well worth a read.

News From Nowhere (2) 15p. david morgan, 20 bedford sq, brighton. a well printed mag that seems to be news about nothing, very odd, a hodgepodge of articles and photos with no theme overall: wilhelm reich article/ arts festivals/ paris commune/ politics/ the odd poem & a few reviews.

Oasis (4) 18p. ian robinson, 12 stevenage rd, sw6. now incorporating expression magazine. 100 well printed quarto pages, bound neatly with a spine & plenty of illustrations. a flux of poetry and prose, all readable, and very worthy of 18p but somewhere the spark misses slightly incl: greek poetry supplement/ peter redgrove/ weissbort/ demelier/ beier/ & many more.

On the Murder of David Gleeson by patrick galvin. 25p. tone press, 30 terminus rd, brighton 1. an attempt at a rich luxury collectors item. fine paper and board surround one short poem -
overall it doesnt come off, the price is too high and to my mind, the poem too weak.

Ore (15) 15p. eric ratcliffe. 11 high plash, cuttys lane, stevenage. first issue for quite a time - but worth waiting for. best issue of ore i've seen. dealing mainly with arthur, driuds & britain as it used to be but with a good many poems. grubb/ john gilbert on e v barclay/ edmonds/ jenkins/ e malone on the book of kells/ cashford/ booth/ connors/ reviews etc. some good stuff here.

Outsider 10p. frank edwards. 225 croydon rd, caterham, surrey. i new mimeo that seemed very promising when issue 2 arrived, issue 3 however isnt too good. but there's time for feet to be found.
no 2 horovitz/ patten/ steve morris/ prose, illustrations & a number of unknown poets.
no 3 richard russell/ best/ maurice carpenter/ gould/ plus some ww2 leaflet reprints.

Penny Farthing Madness by steve morris. 10p. summerstar pubs, 496 redditch rd, B'ham 30. a litho reprint of morris' best collection. a great cover & a good selection.

Peru The New Poetry edited and translated by maureen ahern & david tipton. london magazine editions, 58 frith st, london w1. £1.50 hardback 130 pages. a fine book - the peruvian spirit in full voice - i find it very refreshing to read in depth the writings of another country thats landed itself somewhat outside the mainstream of literature- its the nearest you are going to get to 'untouched by american hand'. and this collection is very much that.

Pink Peace (1) john rice, 1 derby road, folkestone. a neat print job (apart from certain old fashioned letterpress flourishes) but a rather weak content. short poems from unknown poets. but its a first issue, and could get better.

Poems 1962-1969 by jeff nuttall. £1.60. fulcrum press, 20 fitzroy sq, london w1. 95pages hard-bound. i dont think i really liked nuttall's work until i heard him read it and discovered the jazz rhythms he uses. it was all clear then, the stacato voice singing whenever i came across his poetry. this set is pretty comprehensive taking nuttall thru all his phases and hanging around for a long time on his perenial subjects of afterbirth, blood, & pain. nuttall couldnt care a damn, and this is why his poetry works, why it is so good. he gushes in with a real & original voice.wham bam thank you mam. blow the horn, sing the song. read this.

Poetry Information (3) sub 50p. peter hodgkiss, bcm/oracle, london wc1. mimeo sheets of info on latest mags, books, activities and the like. could be good if it comes out often enough.

Poetry News (2) j green. the newsletter of the b'ham poetry contra, bmi, margaret st, b'ham. 6 sheets of news and notes on what the centre is up to. and it does quite a lot too.
no 3 an expanded version with notes and reviews on a good many small press & other poetry bks. it is intended to expand the newsletter into a regular A5 size reviews mag. 28 pages on subscription of 70p per 10 issues. potential reviewers shd contact jim green at the centre or at 18 atherstone close, shirley, solihul.

Poetry Review (vol 62 no 1) 40p. guest editor adrian henri, 21 earls court, london sw5. the poetry review used to be such a drag but this issue is something indeed. the poetry of rock really - the effects of pop on poets and of poets on pop. some really interesting reading here: tom phillips/ macbeth/ jackson/ morgan/ mcgough/ holden/ mike hart/ andy roberts/ lucie-smith/ etc.
vol 62 no 2 another very good issue. things are looking up. edited by martin booth & anthony rudolf it consists of half new work & half translations: redgrove/ guest/ magee/ shuttle/ musgrave/ jaffin/ brownjohn/ macbeth/ han-ch'ing/ meher baba/ lorca/ catullus/ & many many others.

Poetry St.lves (3) 33p. nicki jackowska. tower of babel, tregarthen, zennor, st.ives. a big well printed magazine this one, more an anthology really. neat print, good illustrations. incl: a long and excellent poem from peter redgrove, a long set by penelope shuttle, burroughs like prose from malcolm ritchie, etc etc. its contents doesnt range far but where they do go its good

Poetsdoos (11) 20p. ourside press, 5 manor rd, st albans. "and this may just be heaven". by jeff cloves. last and final issue of a good magazine in the format of a collection of poetry prose, collages etc. entertaining, but never ear thundering. well worth a read.

Pomes & Other Fruit by colin simms. 20p. headland pubs. 34 albany rd, sheffield. a small letterpress booklet of descriptive yorkshire poetry. sounds a drag doesnt it? but its very clever in its construction & use of language. in this case not what you say but the way you say it.

Pomegranate (summer 71) geoff pawling. 17 all saints rd, bristol 8. a well printed load of rubbish. there is a lot in this mag, one or two high spots, but in the main not worth the trouble. derek telling/ charles tomlinson/ roger harris/ shepherd/ larner/ richard evens/ etc.

Postcards by tom phillips. 7p. each. angela flowers gallery, 15 lisle st, london w1. colour prints. one being from tom phillips postcard series (ie he takes pieces from old postcards and enlarges them) & the other in similar style to a humument. try sending these back from blackpool

Pre-view (july 71) 6p. 77 park st, bristol 1. a small printed mag that is the time out of bristol and the west. this issue featuring bill pickard as well as news & notes of whats on.

Priapus (21) 25p. john cotton, 37 lombardy drive, berkhamsted. one of the older hand made mimeo mags that takes few chances with its content but very very readable - must be the best magazine of its type. well set out & duplicated with many litho art pages and a very colourful cover. peter jays greek translations (great) / macbeth/ dm thomas/ bs johnson/ mayer/ aldiss/ hobsbaum/ blish/ golightly/ brunner/ edmonds & a large review section that i didnt agree with.

Queen Camel sister to Big Venus (4) the procession of stately ladies continues. 23p. nick kimberley. 240 camden high st, london nw1. a solid & exciting mag. litho printed in an odd blue ink. reworth/ hollo(good)/ macsweeney/ buck/ fisher/ crozier/ james/ eshleman - all good stuff.

re a vow al by charles verey. 25p. writers forum 'fours' no 2. 262 randolf eve, london w9. verey must be joking - a set of his swirling hand written letter pictures - which are fair enough going totally beyond any possible semantic meaning - but its the illegible hand written bits of rubbish in between that get me. most of the time you cant read them and when you can it proves that it wasnt worth the effort.

The Return of Lazarus by richard burns. 15p. bragora press, 15 shelford park eve, shelford, cambridge. "poems for friends in greece" - solid stuff this, great reading - burns seems to be a hip classicalist if there is such a thing. well worth digging out.

Rooms of mind by dereck ivan surtees. 20p. headland pubns, flat 5, 23 kenwood park rd, Sheffield s7 1 ne. medium pace stuff that did little for me printed in a rather old fashioned style.

The Sad Mountain by tom earley. 90p. phoenix living poets. chatto & windus, 42 william IV st, london wc2. a neat hardback collecting the work of an anglo-welsh poet now living in london. tom earley has a quiet voice dealing delicately with the subjects dear to him: the welsh landscape, mountain ash, the pits, bloomsbury...his poetry is not new in style, its not the sort that shakes you suddenly into a new understanding of the universe but it works, its enjoyable
to read, its meaningful, well written, well controlled, and very worthy of being called poetry.

* Sad Traffic (5) 20p. seaview pubns, 12 regent st, south, barnsley, yorks. must be the best printed, colourful, glossy poetry mag on the market. very illustrated & with some underground newspaper tendencies in its prose content. a good mag indeed.: pete lancaster on the defense of poetry/ rich keys with a long and informative article on the underground press/ nuttall/ david tipton/ dc carr/ interview & poems roy fisher/ notes/ letters/ reviews.

Satori (1) 10p. con moore. 6 balmoral rd, bristol bs7 9az. a small neat litho set of mainly local poets. not up to much yet but could grow.

Sesame (1) 13p. c gibson. 100 olive eve, leigh on sea, essex. mimeo poetry mag yet to find its direction. its not enough really just to collect a bunch of poems and stick them together.

Skylight (1) 15p. peter baker, top flat, 5 fog lane, manchester 20. a new mimeo that could be something in a few issues time. a great start with some very enjoyable poems: paul evans/ chaloner/ magee/ lykiard/ crozier/ hoida/ burns/ macsweeney/ john james/ green/ tina morris/ etc etc.

Spout, Sput, & Spaced Out 3 wide & short booklets from bob leighton. 2a sandy lane, albrighton nr wolverhampton. shouts, screams, slams, wild gestures. its odd. its worth a read.

Stamp by j mcclelland miller. 21p. pale press, 36 marlborough rd, Liverpool 113 8ax. a well printed collection of medium pacers-ranging from the funny to the black. most of them rhyme too.

Stereo Headphones (4) 25p. nick zurbrugg. church steps, kersey, nr ipswich. 'sonic issue - the poetry of sound/ the sound of poetry" 40 fully printed pages of poems and articles on one of poetry's most neglected subjects. a good issue indeed for those interested in the sound of words: briers/ chopin/ cobbing/ hausmann/ heidsieck/ nichol/ de vree/ jandl/ lloyd/ morgen/ & many more.

Sting SF (3) 20p. jane hales. 3 collingwood court, collingwood rise, folkestone. a mimeo & illystrated mag of new writings in the sf field: poetry, prose & graphics. its very different & well worth getting hold of. alexis lykiard/ richard crane/ ken edwards/ maurice hone/ & much more.

Stone Free Press starting soon. john priest, 74 king william street, amblecote, stourbridge. to feature the following: "poetry broadsheet" to be published as often as money allows and to feature poetry from black country poets and general poetry news. "black country revue" a full blown magazine of poetry, prose, plays etc. "poets workhouse" which will sell books and mags by post and "function as a general lettrist clearing house for all poets living in the black country".

Somethings now defunct as a mag in its own right. merged with the new Muse.

Straight (4) 10p. john townson, 48 causeway side, linthwaite, huddersfield. 36p mimeo neo-underground mag. a few interesting items but mostly too near a rag magazine.

Strange Faeces (3) "ron padgett issue". opal nations, 42a pembridge rd, london w11. a large foolscap mimeo devoted to ron padgett's poetry & prose. a very good set indeed - regular poetry that bites and twists. odd entertaining bits & pieces. well worthy of taking up the whole mag.
no 4 getting better all the time this mag. an enjoyable set through and through. ranging from the straight right into the far reaches of the experimental: cobbing/ blazek/ gerz/ nuttall/ disch/ etc etc forthcoming issues include "goodies by anne waldman" and other exciting items.

three poems for voice and movement by bob cobbing. 20p. writers forum 'fours' no 1. the full visual score for one of cobbings latest & best sound tapes. its difficult to judge as a book in its own right - especially after hearing the tape itself. it doesnt work (as a book) as sound poetry - far from it. the reader is left fully on his own to interpret the icons as he will but it does work perhaps as a visual poetry book. see for yourself. certainly a new direction for cobbing.

Tin-Can an anthology of midland poets and writers. 20p. published by the brum arts lab. edited by geoff charlton. Brum Arts Lab, b'ham B19 3UY. a 60 page paper plate litho job that splits itself into three sections - love poems, general themes, & prose. a few items are good enough but on the whole the book didnt interest me. incl: berrington/ ensor/ mcmanus/ steane/ &c

Together (3) 13p. keith leonard, 4 clinton close, coxheath, maidstone. 4to size mimeo & very neat in layout. nothing of great importance here but nothing really bad either. incl: connors etc.

Unicorn Bookshop 50 gloucester road, brighton. a great deal of activity associated with the unicorn these days - mainly due to bill butler and the untiring pat galvin jnr - elsewhere in the small press scene you will see Attila & lon chaney & in addition to those the unicorn produce a vast quantity of book lists: small press, poetry, magazines, general item, etc, etc. - send for some they are bound to have something to interest you. they are also putting out a series of limited edition beautifully printed poem cards. "the first poems" by lee harwood @ 10p and "phoning from sweathouse creek" by richard hugo @ 12 1/2p being the latest two.

Valleys by larry eigner. 15p. big venus. 240 camden high st. london nw1. not sure what to make of this one ... its all about landscapes, trees, & nature. a kind of chinese style takes over in places, the poem becoming a structure on which the reader must fill in detail, or more so listen for the echos that eigner's words evoke ... its a good book & i enjoyed reading it.

Ver Poets Voices (1) 10p. may badman, 10 oldfield rd, london colney, herts. the ver poets are a group that meet & read in st albans and they have put their best into a small book..the first of a series. its not dull & badly written like most books of this type are in fact it makes for quite good reading. paul matthews/ robert armstrong/ john mole/ spratling/ sutcliffe/ & many more.

Viewpoints (76) 15p. lynn carlton, 20 droylsden rd, manchester m10 6hb. hand printed and a new smaller page size that allows for 40 pages. its all medium pace stuff with the odd dreadful poem slung in. the only item i'd question is the fact that to contribute you have to subscribe.

Vis Viva (2) 10p. dave tremellen, crossing house, oddingley, nr droitwich. a solid second issue ..neat mimeo and binding..54 pages which makes for very good value. including: george dowden/ bruton connors/ chris pitt/ strachan/ john ward/ & others. long & interesting editorial by tremellen.

White by martin booth. a hand-set single poem from a very good poet, the latest recipient of the valuable gregory award. sceptre press, frensham, surrey.

Why Britain Needs a Population Policy 10p. a statement by the conservation society. its all here for those that want it, worth a read at least no matter how you feel. 21 hanyards lane, cuffley, potters bar.

Wolf Prints by dick russell. 25p. workshop press, 2 culham court, granville rd, london n4. they're love poems, the flow on the page, sometimes they are not as tight as they might be, sometimes
they're not even love poems. a book worth reading - russell doesnt explode but he might someday.

Words Etcetera a one-shot anthology "a miscellany of literature, art and criticism" £1 from words press, east manor, bramley, surrey. this could well be a magazine in the old style, somehow not belonging to this age. its content is really erratic, ranging from the dull & terrible to the very readable. well printed. incl: booth/ guest/ morse/ patten/ pudney/ lauder/ morrison/ & many others.

Workshop (12) 25p. 2 culham court, granville rd, london n4., special translations issue guest edited by anthony rudolf. 32 pages neat letterpress maybe a bit expensive for the price but a good issue .... there seems to be a growing interest in the stream of literatures outside england - perhaps because english literature is running itself into a ditch? the mag includes translations from all over by such people as macsweeney/ levi/ ted walker/ hamburger/ leslie norris/ etc etc.

Zagamine 3p. simon lee. 82 cummor hill, oxford. mimeo/ litho sheets, printed all over the place & holding together on one pin. its hard to read & often not worth the time. but there are some worthy/ funny/ new ideas in here. drawings, poem bits, prose bits & scribbles.
