Ark River Review (1) 75c. j. katz. 1410 w murdock, wichita, kansaa 67203. a neat new poetry mag. litho printed but not as exciting as i expected it to be: hollo/ boyd/ sobin/ vogelseng/ & much more.

Assembling $2.50. compiled by richard kostelantez & henry korn. gnilbmessa inc. box 1967 brooklyn, new york 11202. 'a collection of otherwise unpublishable manuscripts'. the idea isnt new - the last issue of And was like this - the contributors print their own work on their own paper, the editors do no editing, just compiling. a free co-operative magazine. it sounds fine and there is always some good stuff inside but the rubbish you have to wade thru to find it! &
this mag is no exception although whats good is good & that makes the whole venture a bit exciting. poems/ plays/ events/ prose/ graphics/ handwriting/ words/ a smear of chocolate/ etc.

are:
the teeth mother naked at last (pocket poets series 26) by robert bly @ 43p. i thought i had heard it all with vietnam poems, thought the vein worked out - but bly proves me wrong. its one of the best long poems i've read in years, it grips you by the throat, picks you up and hurls you to the other side of the room. a wow. read this if its the only poem you do read.
revolutionary letters etc (pocket poets 27) by diane di prima @ 85p. i dont see what all the fuss is about di prima. she finds it hard going to be poetic at all. this set are sometimes advice on what to do when the revolution comes, sometimes protest that the revolution isnt here yet and sometimes dismal remarks on what so and so did in the cause of the revolution. they are bad as poems & if you treat them as anything else you'll find half the facts used are wrong and half the arguments have huge holes in them. i want the revolution to come as much as di prima does but i'm sure it wont happen if we all listen to her.
A Childs Poem & Poems by karen waring. $1. open skull press, 2751 castro way, sacramento 95818. a mimeo set of really good poems. the usual thing is for a big guy to write long heavy poems about the city, about its women, the sidewalks, the bars, the teeth & the blood. thats what this is like - but the poet is a woman and there is a lot of love & gentleness in the poems.
Computers for the Arts by dick higgins. 90c. abyss pubs, po box c, somerville, mass 02143. a handbook this one, appearing to be an introduction to the systems available in the use of computers for experimental poetry. if you know programing you're okay, if you dont leave it alone.
A Conscientious Guide to Drug Abuse by vic pawlak. $1.25. mastodon publ., 4514 fountain ave, los angeles, calif 90029. 'a 32 page crash program in drug survival'. there are many guides to the drugs of this world but none i've seen is as lucid and useful as this. a worthy buy for freaks and experimentors of all types. follow the book & you wont die but then those that are going to die are usually too far gone to read anyway.
* Country Senses 25c box 465, woodbury, conn 06798. woodfreaks now turned into a commune. not as well printed as it used to be but the content is better by far. in fact there is a content now - before i'm sure it used to be all adverts and strange drawings.
Die Fabelhafte Getraume Von Taifun Willi by dick higgins. $1.45. abyss pubs, po box c, somerville, mass. 02143. a play for three voices- man & woman in english. announcer in german. decor by bern porter (graphics/ collages). at a guess i'd say it was written by chance methods.
Earthwords (6) 25c. charles tidler. orphan universe press, box 14, ganges, bc, Canada. aneat mimeo at a very low price. incl: hugh fox/ locklin/ doyle/ wellman/ etc etc. worth a read.
Fantastic Architecture by dick higgins & wolf vistell. $6.95. something else press, elm street, millerton, new york 12546. 192 page hardback - in the tradition of "new" books that something else are famous for - no text as such..floating captions/ dialogues/ questions on transparent paper set into the body of the book. fantastic architecture is a beautiful book, an anthology of new ideas about space, buildings, people, living & the rest by poets, painters, writers. not one of them a practicing architect. as higgins points out: architecture has not moved at all for centuries, sure materials have changed, but basic ideas have not, this book shows directions, presents ideas, asks questions. hausmann's stairs to nowhere, hollein's aircraft carrier cities, bury's twisted new york skylines, vostell's giant food mixer as an addition to the roof of museums, oldenburgs' colossal balls set in the river thames, and so much more. an engaging book worthy of anyones book shelves, whether they care about buildings or not.
Flux & Reflux by douglas blazek. about $2. oyez pubs. available from serendipity bks, 1790 shattuck eve, berkeley, cal 94709. blazek must be king of the small presses, god knows how many different mimeo books he's had out. this one is a very fine print job, about the neatest blaz book i've seen. the poetry is typical blazek...america as it is, the small things, the blood, the streets, toothbrushes, tin cans, rust, dust, urine ... a good book indeed.
Great Swamp Erie da da Boom 25c. angry city press, 14016 orinoco ave, a cleveland, ohio 44112. from the remains of da levy'd buddhist third class junkmail oracle comes a new u/g paper. its fine enough in itself but now much the same as the rest. the oracle was different.
Local Earth (2) $2. bob phillips, 8819 se 29th, milwaukie, oregon 97202. a local poetry & prose mag - well printed with some nice photographs but beyond that ----.
One day. one long day. a child looked over all that was. & was not pleased. at all. by jim orvino sorcic. 75c. interbang, 1668 n warren, milwaukee, wis 53202. beautiful print job, a luxury edition almost. a song of being full of sorcic's indian origins. very good.
* Other Scenes (vol 5 no 1) 50c. john wilcock, 204 west 10th st, new york 10014. one of the longest standing and best u/g items around. more a magazine than a newspaper. comics/ sex/ abbie hoffman on how to fuck the system/ witches almanac/ pubic hair/ nevada/ mexico/ warhol/ etc.
Out of Sight (1) james mechem, box 8006, wichita ks 67208. spirit duplicated 8 pager. i thought at one time that it was only the uk that brought these terrible things out. i was wrong.
Popular Poetry & Photography Phront is looking for 52 poems & 52 photographs for a proposed weekly calendar. short poems suitable for consumption by the general public. photos, black & white, 8x10 to be printed along with poems. previous publication of a poem is no problem as long as reprint permission can be obtained without a fee. the calendar will be designed for distribution on a very wide basis at a yet undetermined price & if profits result they will go back to the poets & the photographers. good visual poems are also needed. all contributions with irc's to a g sobin, dept of english, wichita state univ, wichita, kansas 67208.
Reno Nevada by richard morris. camels coming press, po box 703, San faranscisco, calif 94101 a solid well controlled set by a poet of the underground. with this book he rises.
Riverside Qtly (vol 4 no 4) 60c. 1 sapiro, 40 univ sta, regina, Canada. an sf & poetry mag of high quality, avoiding the pitfalls of most fanzines. a good solid read for anyone into sf & fantasy.
Star West (vol 1 no 4) leon spiro, box 731, sausalito, calif 94965. spiros crazy newspapers the SB Gazette & larvae plus a new one 'golden gate star' all rolled into one poetry newspaper covering as many languages as there are. spiro seems to work mainly from re-prints & from the most unlikely people too. its a bit hard to read unless you know 8 languages & have eyes that read sideways, upsidedown and back to front as well as normally. fun though.
Vibrations (vol 2 no 1) drug survival news $1 sub. do it now, po 3573, hollywood, calif 90028. dope news as it comes in & up. comics/ food/ poems and anything else related. newsprint.
Visual Language by richard kostelantez. $2. assembling press, po box 1967, brooklyn, new york 11202. simplified concrete. the words explaining what they are by way of visual image. very neatly done & kostelantez should turn out some good work after these beginings.
Zany Typhoons by douglas blazek. open skull press, 2751 castro way, Sacramento, calif 95818. never an issue of second aeon comes out without blaz also putting one, two, three books out too. of this set he says 'they're the outcroppings of youthful endeavours, & like a lot of things from back then, will be unable to continue the journey with me to the end'. this is blazek the meat poet, the big man with blood on his hands and screams in his voice. a very good collection indeed. send $2 ..its well worth it in size alone.
