We discover we are all doing the same thing –
looking and being looked at, reminiscing,
dreaming — and it would be happening anyway
if we were elsewhere, though that is by-the-by,
because, after coffee, alcohol and the walk,
a chapter of Cornwell and a page of Amis,
after drawing in public without any fear,
it crossed my mind that time is slower here,
like childhood, and star production higher,
those stellar innovations above the lake,
village lights like tiered decks of an ocean liner
taking centuries to cross the intervening space.
