Overlooking Wernfawr III
Clouds, like snow,
ice-floed by the cold, blue cutting edge
of an antarctic sea,
beach themselves on saxifrage mountains,
those naked pinkly-purple bruises
buffetted between the conifer plantations
and the sharp sky.
The foothills of Mynydd Epynt, below,
are clumped with deciduous trees,
ancient gutted oak,
silver-boned birch
amongst the smooth-skinned beech,
and the corkscrew limbs of tipsy elms,
heady, and unsteady on their feet.
But it is the wild-cherry trees,
with their white blossoms surrealistically
outnumbering their leaves,
that outshine it all.
Even the uneven, clumsy white farmhouse walls
against its red, ploughed fields,
in Wernfawr, with its fine views
of both Brecon Beacons
and the Valley of the Usk,
winding like a small worm
in the apple of its eye,
fails to compare.
Yet even the cherry blossoms
are no reason for overlooking Wernfawr.
