The Water's Edge
Turn left to the water’s edge,
the grail. The novelty has worn off,
except for the passenger ferry
crossing in the wake of freighters,
tankers, the bulk of steel.
A loss of faith and the purchase
of icons, the road lessening
to a path until it finds itself again
at the burnt-out caravan
and the back of a supermarket.
Ice-cream makes it worthwhile.
Household and fancy goods.
Something vague about tradition,
the descent into what is acceptable.
The small details: a glove’s empty fist;
the sea’s roughened silver.
The renovated chalets speaking for
who has upped sticks and moved in.
That is. who. beyond all sense,
has struck it rich and settled here.
