One-Way System
An old woman, stooped, unbuttoned, grey,
stands at the bus-stop – an advert
for a passenger, full of expectation –
as if the bus, parked, empty of a driver,
is ready to move to the boarding point, open
its doors, take her. We hang back.
We don’t assume the 77A
will recognise its queue, in this landscape
of spectacular wrappers, huge electric
adverts promising transport beyond
Capitol Studios, Ace Wine, the slate yard.
Claire Crowther’s poems have been published in a wide variety of British and North American journals including TLS, Poetry Review, Poetry Wales, PN Review and Ambit. Her pamphlet The Glass Harmonica was published by Flarestack Press in 2003, and her first collection is forthcoming from Shearsman Press in March 2007.
