Magma Showcase: Claire Crowther
The Stone Leaves of Southwell
Stumbling, my grandmother laughed
at bees trapped in her hair.
She leaned against hard stems of hop
to cool the stings. Foliage sprang
everywhere in the lanes of masonry,
finials, tympana, jambs,
arches, as limestone released
hawthorn, bryony, maple,
deeply dissected oak leaves.
Her death is as fresh
as when it flickered in stone woods
which look, but aren’t, deciduous like us.
Claire Crowther’s poems have been published in a wide variety of British and North American journals including TLS, Poetry Review, Poetry Wales, PN Review and Ambit. Her pamphlet The Glass Harmonica was published by Flarestack Press in 2003, and her first collection is forthcoming from Shearsman Press in March 2007.
