Magma Showcase: Claire Crowther
Behind the glass in Burgerzoo, a cave
where elongated aye-aye fingers probe
bark. A tape of crickets over Blur.
My granddaughter opens a Kid’s Bag.
I wind the clockwork gift. My daughter
has dispensed her child with pink: skirt
strawberry, coat roses. Her legs are striped
with shakes of pink wool. When did I
decide on black and grey? Even her dark
hair is not moonless. “Why can’t
an aye-aye go home? What’s an omen
of evil?” Its tail, twice body length,
swishes a tree trunk. Larvae hide
in hollows. A naked ear rotates right, left.
Claire Crowther’s poems have been published in a wide variety of British and North American journals including TLS, Poetry Review, Poetry Wales, PN Review and Ambit. Her pamphlet The Glass Harmonica was published by Flarestack Press in 2003, and her first collection is forthcoming from Shearsman Press in March 2007.
