Moonstone 97 is generously packed with poems, but not cramped so that they are difficult to read. Something has gone wrong with the printing of the subscription details and mini-reviews on the last page and it is hard to read. Deborah Tyler-Bennett's Seaweed Song is good, musical, beautifully turned and with strong images: '...My brothers sprawled this coast/ long years before men / saw longships off Kirkwall, ghost / hulls dissolved in rain. // Let whooping children dive and run, / cast bladderwrack high, / from slackening twists of rope come /droplets of sky.' I enjoyed Geoff Stevens' wry observations on a congregation feeling trapped in Congregation and Kenneth Steven's fine, muscular, painful The Sea Change. Envisioning Evidence by Steve Sneyd is a tour de force. The language races breathlessly,unpunctuated, fractured and coherent at the same time, with fresh and powerful images throughout: 'webtangle deadskin balls / shredlegs of were insects / spiders once...first yellow celandine of / course shouldn't pick but / bend to try pull nd burrow / next gives way under braced boot and / hollow opens and can see well down / sun catching pattern more complex / even than catkin interhang...'
