Shearsman 62 is neatly and well-produced and tightly packed with poems. Brian Louis Pearce's Corfu with an Umbrella gives a good picture of the island, evoking warmth with a series of disparate, often humorous images, 'Waves, red sail, boy fishing: / girl watching hair brushed back / by the beah breeze.....the stiff brush brush of the / poplars below the pass / spells for donkey and scooter / shade on the way to the grave, / /Waves of heat; daze of leaves...' to the unexpected 'the salmon pimpernel / and lemon butterfly, / await you at the oak'. Many of the poems in this issue have nature imagery and themes. I also particularly liked Peter Boyle's excellent Two Poems Without a Name, which fuses imagery of the natural world with tenderness in a structurally effective, beautiful and moving way: 'You gave me a miniature rainforest as a present. / In its small brown pot / I watered it and clipped its canopy. / When the sky disappears beyond its / gnomic and intricately referenced leaves, / I will remember your face / and all its tenderness. / Everything you gave is alive somewhere...'
