14 magazine.
PO Box 253, Northwood, Middx. HA6 2ZF, twice yearly, £2.95 each issue, plus 35p postage.
14 is a new magazine specialising in poems of 14 lines. My first expectation was that these would be sonnets. Some are, but this is not a necessary qualification. Although Issue 1 has a good layout, spiced with some drawings, I felt the line under the poem's title and above the name of the poet was distracting and unnecessary. The quality of the poetry is high. Most contributors are published already and 14 is a promising newcomer. Tony Turner's well-constructed humorous Fighting the Form is worthy of note. He begins 'Sestinas tie my neck up in a knot / Repeating words are like a traffic jam', concluding 'And poetry will cease to be a chore / And I will be myself and write once more'. David Ford's fine Bebe Marie contains interesting imagery and insight into a bad relationship: '...Now winter possesses the house, / Wind rattles through the empty rooms, / Snow climbs the stairs and Marie / Scrubs her hands over and over / Until the skin is raw enough to forget...' There are many good things. Three other poems of note are the menacing and original Mysterious Woods by Valerie Dunmore, The New Heart by Jane Spray and Mike Koh's Mad View of God's Earth.
