To make women invisible
First you take them from the workplace -
There is something about a woman’s voice that is too
Shrill. The hoopoe comes to mind.
Then you close down female schools.
There is nothing worth learning for girls
Their husbands could not teach them.
Never allow them treatment in hospitals;
Men should not be harassed
With ailing female flesh.
Each woman must cover herself in a burqa;
A restoration of medieval costume
Is not before time.
Behind their veils and in their silent slippers
They will not disturb the thoughts of men.
(If anyone shows an ankle - stone them.)
They will disappear silently, discreetly -
As sacrificial smoke from a pyre.
Or, sometimes, like a loud fart
Relieving a man’s intestines.
