On visiting the Lachine Rapids
Although the early April land has not
As yet awoke from winter dreams, one stands
Agaze, in wonder that the workings of
A quarter of the continent could speak
All in one mighty voice through this great flood.
Below lies Montreal, since brought into
Existence by these rapids, where the names
Of old explorers of the river - Jacques
Cartier, La Salle and de Champlain - still haunt
The city's sites and streets like watchful ghosts.
Silent, one contemplates the river's power -
These turbulent leaps from one abysm to
The next - this deluge wild, where waters that
Beneath Superior's storms once rolled, thunder
Again, upon their journey to the sea.
