On the removal of the last seat in the Station Walks, Newcastle
Stern puritans have dragged our bench away,
On which we paused to kiss, brief months ago.
Did some leaf-hidden witness rage to know
Of bliss defying the torments of today?
Love makes its own world, gold amid the grey,
But nothing so provokes an envious foe.
Stern puritans have dragged our bench away,
On which we paused to kiss, mere months ago.
Like the sly snake, in Eden holding sway,
Perhaps some dark fiend watched in wistful woe
The love of man and woman still aglow.
Now walkers walk, but lovers cannot stay:
Stern puritans have dragged our bench away.
