On and inland island
On this calm coast the small iambic waves
remind me of Shakespearean blank verse
that some apprentice actor must rehearse
repeatedly, as echoes speak in caves.
It almost makes one fancy life behaves -
because it's hard to think of something worse
than this salt zephyr, unequipped to curse,
while watching here, where palms are calm as graves.
And yet they tell me that the hurricane
sent tentacles of wind and water here,
while wreaking havoc off on far Cape Fear,
and that a storm-surge drowned the chatelaine
whose hideaway stood near this very beach,
which one would think was simply out of reach.
