Table Legs
They end before they should,
continuing perhaps through the floor.
My father, with his crippled legs
encased in callipers,
sawed off a chair
so my feet touched the ground.
My mother rested
swollen, bulbous ankles
on the pouf, stockings down
and waited to be waited on
while I in my red shoes
danced on, unable to stop
till I reached the hatchet-man's cottage.
continuing perhaps through the floor.
