Wedding Cake
Descending the tiers
in my wedding cake, down
to the bit in the basement;
the wine cellar, all bottles
empty, festooned in spiders' webs, looking
for the ladybirds. Lucky horse-shoe
the wrong way up, half a vase
holds icing sugar flowers
with paper leaves; lining up
the silver shoes in case
they come in handy.
Black-suit-man, one arm
bent, stands up, alone,
on top, imagining he presides
over the universe, making plans
to control the lot.
